Happy 2010

I hope Santa was suitably generous. There will be a match at Underhill this Sunday am, details to follow. Midweek training starts this coming Tues 5th 1800-1900 Oystermouth Gym. If anyone has a local business or contacts we are looking for some sponsorship towards training tops. After the success of the Bristol Tour can we gage interest for a team at Luctonians (Hereford in April).

Christmas Game at Underhill

Meet at 10:00 at Underhill on Sunday - and be kitted out to join in and get muddy!

The 6s and 7s are going back to the rugby club afterwards, so it will be open for drinks and hotdogs. We'll need to pick up some rolls for the team if we want to go, so text me if you're up for it.

11s are going to the Con club where they have organised some hot food via one of their parents - Alex mentioned this, I think you can pay when you get there.

If you can't come on Sunday - thanks for your support and patience during a very wet autumn. Have a Merry Christmas and see you back in the New Year!

Training in Oystermouth School Gym

Don't forget we've moved Tuesday night training indoors. It starts half and hour later at 18:00 until 19:00. The gym is the large building to the right of the ramp entrance on Newton Road - take the stairs (internal - not the external fire escape) to the first floor. There are other classes before and after us, so we'll have to be in and out promptly.

TRAINING CANCELLED

Raging wind, Raindrop darts against the window, how to put a young lad off rugby.... force him to play in the rain and wind...getting cold, wet and miserable...... however much enthusiasm we have for the game we must remember it has to be enjoyable!

Wether Alert No GAME SUNDAY!

Great training game last Sunday, looking at developing some aspects of our game...Aggression in the contact area, wipeouts and passing the ball into space to allow our runners space to score tries.

Rhyddian was man of the match for excellent play in more than one area of his game...

Like I said, make the most of the weather.. initial plan is to train at Bishopston but check the bolg as all always...The greatest plans of mice and men..... massive Autumn gale due to strike us Sunday morning!

Penlan Cancelled: Taining Match 25th 10:00 Bishopston

It was an excellent performance against South Gower and they were concerned when we were ahead after the first 10. We have certainly upped the level since our last meeting. Very impressed with the large number who braved the rain on Tues for a quality training session. Beginning to get some aggression into the forwards and momentum with running. Also some signs of off-loading and more team play emerging.
Penlan have no U9 so we will play a match against each other.

Focus Points

Aggresive Running by ball carriers + recycle to scrum halves
Backs maintaining defensive & attacking line and staying out of pile-ups
Contine Ruck & Breakdown area traing

The 'backs' for this game will be encouraged to stay out of the mauls to keep structure

Team for the 1st and 3rd Quarter: Mumbles 2 South Gower 3

Team for the 2nd and 4th Quarter: Mumbles 2 South Gower 6

Training at Underhill on Tuesday as usual.

Player of the match went to Rhyddian for running good lines and scoring a try, well done.

GAME V South Gower (Home)

The game this Sunday will be at Bishopston. Get there for ten O'clock .

I have the water bottles and would like someone to help fill the bottle and carry it to the troops, as I will be busy refereeing.

Weather is forecast to be good, make the most of it as there are bound to be more challenging days as the winter approaches.

Well done to everyone who gave so much effort in today's first matches. A very physical game with Gowerton and Penclawdd with excellent mauling and driving from the Pirates. Real guts shown by many with special mention to Elias and Liam in the maul and tackle and some solid defence by Will, Tal and Connor. Also some hard graft by Josh and Luke upfront. LOUGHOR MATCH REPORT

Firstly may I apologise for my wording on "the golden 10" it was all meant in light heartidness really. All of your children are capable of playing Rugby - what i was trying to achieve today was to give the boys who come on a regular basis , a good run and a chance to prove what they are capable of,from which i can happily report they were fantastic!! I have never really watched closely the likes of Tal,Freddie, Connor O,Tomasz, Tomos A, Sean, Ioan and Elias before and they certainly are up and coming stars of the future i think. They all possess key elements of thier game play and certainly played as a team today.

We didnt give Loughor the opportunities that they thought they were going to get in the second and third counts of play. We passed the ball to each other and created spaces in thier very good defence.....I am certainly pleased that we came away with the knowledge that all of the above mentioned Children really did turn up today - some great Tagging - Defence- Attacking and Supporting were all shown . The Man of the Match (well Ball of the Match!) went to Freddie who scored 3 tries!! Tal went over for 2 tries!! Sean scored a great try running down the wing and upsetting thier defence, Tomasz was tagged just short of scoring a try.
Can definately see a vast improvement on the last games that the Children have been involved in of recent times. The Key element for me was ommitting out the likes of Will/Liam/Jake/Megan/Ryan/John - whilst all these excellent players regularly create good game play, the others in the team never really get to have a good run with the ball much - so it was a fantasic opportuninty to see those peform well. REMEMBER -IT IS ALL ABOUT INCLUSION!!!!!! game ended 10-6 to Loughor, but i am happy with the result and the way we played. we could have won it.
Thanks to all the Coaches and the Parents support and help

Pirates Sponsor Lookout -Ahoy!

We will get new Pirates strip for the beginning of next season. We need to raise some cash and are appealing for sponsors. If anyone has themselves or friends or family with a small business who would consider contributing for the privilege of their logo on the strip we would love to hear from you (alexchase@btinternet.com)-no amount too small.

End Of Season Strategy

We are approaching the end of an era as our Tag game comes to and end and we embark on full contact rugby. Following a very successful coaches meeting we want to use our few remaining fixtures to get all the boys and girl involved in as much rugby as possible. First up is the Lougher match. Rob has picked a fresh squad for this one designed to give opportunity and bring out the best as we rest some of the more dominant players. Please emphasize defensive line (team work), tagging and passing. On Easter Sunday we will keep the fixture against South Gower unless sufficient people e email Will (w.ferguson@tiscali.co.uk) to say they are doing other things, but please let him know EITHER WAY. We expect everyone who wants play to travel to South Gower rather than a team selection. The squads for Penlan and Penclawdd will be posted next week. Again please let me know EITHER WAY for Dunvant May 3rd bank holiday weekend as we have entered 2 teams and it would be a shame to let them down, so we need to know if you have other plans please (alexchase@btinternet.com). Good luck to the Lougher squad – everyone else contact & tag training down the park 9.30-11.15.

Pirates vs Gowerton & Penclawdd Gallery

Fall Bay Match Report

An excellent display costing me ice cream for all PIRATES. Strong defensive line with good communication stopped Fall Bay scoring for a prolonged period. Lots of tries, BUT could have been more if we work on not getting isolated on our own. As we switch to contact it is now important to realise that passing the ball to allow the TEAM to continue the attack if more important than the INDIVIDUAL going a few extra metres taking him away from SUPPORT. We will work on this in training more and more. A good win due to functioning as a team in defence. Top tagger went to Jake.

This Week LOUGHOR away 11am

Hi all, I have been instructed to post a team for the Loughor game, it is away at thier ground, website details are : http://www.pitchero.com/clubs/loughor/?primary=aboutus&secondary=location its more in Gorseinon than Loughor really.... I would like to see at least a team of 10 players - and here are the golden 10 : Tomasz,Josh,Elias,TomosA,Ioan,Tal,Freddie,Alex,ConnorOshea, and we now need Sean (thanks Max' Dad for letting us know Max couldnt make it.) . . if any probs with Attendance please let me know as soon as on robbeynon@ntlworld.com this will give me time to organise a few replacements. for the rest of the Hard legged Professionals (you Pirates) training down the park as normal for a 9.30am start, Will, Alex, Jay and John will be ready and waiting for a hard training regime ha ha. We need to work on a few things before the game so can we make a 10.30am turn up at Loughor for those who are mentioned in attending.

Sunday 29th Fall Bay & Gowerton Away

Well done to everyone for such an enthusiatic and successful first contact match. Bad luck Max B for surviving the game and breaking his arm walking home. Still awaiting final confirmation but planned trips to Fall Bay and Gowerton squads are as follows.Like Warren Gatland we are experimenting with new combinations although international selections were not determined quite so much by who's brother is playing where. I hope this works to split coaches and accomodate preferences but let me know...(and let me know if you're away in case we need to balance numbers up)

Match Report, Dunvant 15 March

Great game for the Crossbones against Dunvant. Their referee was excellent and since it was warm and sunny he was happy just to let the game run - I think the final score was agreed at 10-10. Will scored most of these (and got a player of the week award), Tal one and apologies if I missed anyone else getting over the line. Meg did a great job of directing the game - a captain for the future! We saw some great ball handling skills and tagging, but also need to work on the defensive line and supporting during attacking play. The Ref also needed to talk to both teams about some over enthusiastic tackling - no contact until next year!!

Special mentions for Dylan, who volunteered to play (and almost scored) for Dunvant, Elias who had a nasty knock to the head and had to sit out most of the game and Ioan who received the other player of the week award for such good improvement in his play and concentration over the season.

Sorry no photos this week - see you down Underhill on Sunday.

Sunday 8th, Gower Cup & Kit

Well done to all who braved the rain last Sunday. Dividing the pitch into lanes was very helpful to keep the line in attack and defence. Already muddy it was a must to introduce a taste for tackling with an excellent effort by all, especially our ‘volunteers’ Jay & John.

I have had some questions about the Gower Cup at Penclawdd on April 26th. Unfortunately they will not allow us to enter 2 teams and the squad size is restricted For this game only therefore there will be an element of ‘selection’ based on the usual strengths of commitment, attendance, ability, effort and concentration with the will to progress as far as possible in the tournament.

I am pleased that both trophies have resurfaced. There are also a few hoodies and beanies left over if anyone missed out or mislaid. As we introduce contact I would be grateful also if everyone would consider a gum shield and scrum cap to maximize safety. Good luck to the Crossbones at Dunvant. We will be mixing the squads up again for the remainder of the fixtures.

"Loughor beaten!" our 4th Victory in a row

"HAPPY ST DAVIDS DAY"
Happy St. Davids Day to all of us, and what a fine bright sunny day it was... Sara (Max bowyers mum) was at the ready to hand out the Welsh Cakes at the end of a fantastic game which finished us "THE PIRATES" beating a well organised Loughor Under8's side.
A hatrick scored by Liam, Will made it 2 more, Ryan and Jake both scored points and John doing a fantastic run from the halfway line to go it alone and score.
Matthew Meg Tal Iowain were all a tower of strength in the heat of the battle and all the Pirates held thier positions well. the 2 Connors had fantastic games pulling out all the stops in going forward with the ball, Alex Rhydian Thomas - again played with Pirate spirit, and sang a song which went something like "Skulls Crossbones the Mumbles Pirates" I think that is the making for a great HAKA dont you think?? 8-4 to us the final score.. well done lets keep it up we are on a roll.. but the main importance is that you all enjoyed. Thanks to all who helped out with the Training session and the substitutions. Thanks once again for the pictures Tony, they show great Action shots (luckily none of which my Legs are in)

Luctonians Tour 19th April

I did not get enough 'definates' to enter a team for the tour but am very grateful to those who did reply. We are first reserves and my list of players so far is Thomas T, Jake, Ryan, Tal, Liam & Will(if brother George is going). Apologies to anyone else who has repied and I've missed off (I had also a few maybes)and let me know if anyone wishes to be available should we get the nod. I managed to slip a disc on the night after the England Wales match(!) and need a spinal op this week. I hope to draft in some experienced contact coach sessions to steer us into next season in the next few weeks but if anyone has an old pair of boots in the garage and can help the crew while I'm out it would be much appreciated. Fixture list says Waunarlydd away but as I remember they do not have a U8 side - DETAILS for this week(1/3/09) to follow therefore.

Mumbles Double over a great Penclawdd side

Hi Guys, thanks for your support today and what a great turn out again. It was good to see Max bowyer back from a long holiday and Will was in action, everyone who played today played with great Mumbles Pirate passion and turned on the style once again, It finished 9-7 to the Mumbles Pirates there was great passing and movement supporting play and great scoring moments, Will what great running from you and some good tries, Ryan also had some good moments, whilst all of you contributed to a great game. there were some wild passes in the heat of the moment but im sure we can work on those situations in a training enviroment. we have to organise the defence and attcak lines a little quicker in future but again guys I am impressed.

REMEMBER Penclawdd havent really been beaten all season and we have in the last week beat them twice, so that says a lot about our training, our playing and our hunger for the ball. WELL DONE Keep it up team. da iawn
PLAYER OF THE WEEK GOES TO THOMOS TRUSCOTT - Well done! you deserve it :)

Home Game against Penclawdd this Sunday

After speaking with Mike and Alex, we will be hosting a game this Sunday with Penclawdd
sorry for the late notice here, I would have liked Crossbones to play against Morriston but that game got cancelled.
I am really keen on getting them a game as that is the best form of training i suppose. We'll see who turns up for the whole session at 9.30am shall we? as I know some of you have made plans this weekend with mini holiday breaks and what not.
I hope we can give them a game and we have enough MumblesPirates turn up.
(HOME GAME at UNDERHILL)
Cheers

Wow, How good were we on Tuesday Night? Jon, Jake, Josh, Ryan, Tal, Cai, Dylan, Tom T , Liam Rhydian, Connor O.. all of you deserve trophies for the way you played tonight. 8-4 Mumbles Pirates!! where do you start with the match report? our defence our attacking our passing were all outstanding guys, keep it up :) we have certainly set the standard now and raised our game, did you know Penclawdd havent really lost a game all season until tonight, and Chris Under8's coach (penclawdd)was very supportive of us in our hunger for the ball and scoring opportunities, could it get any better?? Yes - even Kelvin from Under 8's Gowerton said we were on fire tonight and complimented us, which is an excellent achievement.. even Chris our under 10 coach was impressed. Wow what a result.

Uplands match report

Well done again today a great effort from all, the scoreline does not in any shape or form reflect the playing we were at times outstanding again team!! some great running and supporting play. we seemed a bit flat in defence at times but that is something we can work on, some excellent and brave tagging going on.. there were a lot of us really wanting the ball and sorry Liam for standing on your foot.
Uplands were definately fired up for a match, and considering we scored the first try they came back into the game. Will tried his best to give a fair and even game in keeping the flow going, and all credit to him Reffing is no fun whatsoever! it finished 4-2 to the Uplands Side and as I said take pride team in knowing we played good rugby today. For those of us who are interested in giving penclawdd a game on Tuesday 6.15pm then please email myself robbeynon@ntlworld.com or alexchase@btinternet.com to confirm I will be attending, and what about the Luctonians anglo welsh cup? why not? weve got a great side lets go for it this season it would be nice to get some added expereince.
Cheers hope to see you Tuesday night down Penclawdd.

Fancy a Tour?

Well done last weekend.
Luctonian RFC Anglo Welsh Mini Tournament
Sunday 19th April 2009

We have been invited to take part in the Luctonian RFC Anglo Welsh Mini Tournament on Sunday 19th April 2009. Luctonians is a very established and well run Tournament. The club is based in Leominster (exactly!).

Several age groups from Mumbles have been invited and are going. Options include night before & festivities or bus/cars on the day.
Premier Inn in Hereford, (the nearest Premier Inn) for evening of 18th April. The cost will be £53.00 for the room and breakfast 2adults, 2kids).

The Tournament starts at 10.00 am, so those wishing to come up for the day could make it with an early start-I think we need 10. U9,U10 and U11 going.

send me an email (alexchase@btinternet.com) to gauge interest. I'm away this week. Come on the Crossbones with Penclawdd at home!

Some Admin...Please Check

I am finalising the team subscription records for this season (for the Crusader / Pirates / Wildcats who run a joint account) as most (but not all!!) the money is now in. There are two standing orders that I can't match to specific players. Both were set up in Oct/Nov. One under the name of Fitzgerald and one under the name Christopher. If you recognise these standing orders can you please e-mail me on m.b.gravenor@swan.ac.uk and just confirm the name of the player for whom you are paying (and the team). Thanks for listening. When I have this info I'll finally be able to finish this year's admin, and hopefully next year will be alot easier. MIKE.

Sunday 1st February GOWERTON Match report

Firstly well done to all the Mumbles Pirates today! I know it was a really cold start this morning and for a lot of us, we probably didn't want to venture out into the nasty weather, but that said it was worth it. the Skulls were really fired up for a great game against the mighty Gowerton pack...and boy what a game, its certainly one im going to remember for a long time to come as a Coach - everything today was perfect, our running our passing movement, supporting play Defensive and Attacking lines it was nice to see it finally pay off after all the training we have had.
5-5 it finished with Max Bowyer scoring a Hat Trick (WELL DONE!!) Jake scoring for 1 and our player of the week award winner John.. well done to you :)
POSITIVE PLAY
Gowerton were strong and Kelvin has trained them well it showed in thier game style and play... we were also strong and gave width to our play by inclusion of great passing finding space and running the lines very closely... THE BIG MOMENT we had 5 tags and just prevented a try scoring opportunity (WELL DONE CONNOR MORT!) we defended well on our line, and closed them down easily so much so that Gowerton were on the back foot and back up to the Half Way line! we got the tags and turned over balls about 3 times it was outstanding to watch as your children started to Gel as a perfect team, i am very proud of what they all acheived today.

Thanks to all
A very Happy Coach

Uplands RFC Match Report

Well done to all today for a great effort, it was nice to see the Kids enjoying the pre-match warm up sessions along with a very good game of Tag Rugby.. some excellent movement on and off the ball at times helped claim our second draw of the season at 8-8 we showed strength width and depth, there were a few "WILD" passes when the pressure was on, but we can work on that. I am sure at times i thought the referee could have used his glasses but "i know what its like to be in that position" so, not for me to comment really.
Player of the Week goes to Ryan Cole, who showed great dodging/speed/ and resilience in supporting play - CONGRATULATIONS :) next week we are away to Loughor - Will to confirm with Mike and should see a blog up here soon, so dont forget to keep checking!!

We all seemed to enjoy todays team effort , Will for running behind our squad, Alex also for doing the same and with a dodgy stomach!! Advice: (dont Eat Clams!)
