The match today against Vardre was the first competitive match for a number of our new Pirates including Joe, Tomos, Owen, Matthew and Cian. After an entertaining practice match they got a taste of the physical difference between practice and the real thing.
In the match Vardre started strongly and took an early lead. However, the introduction in the middle third of the game of some of our more experienced players helped to change the momentum of the match. The Pirates took the lead and continued to play some nice rugby at times, off-loading in the tackle and supporting well. A couple of nice turn-overs were won by Tal and Tom T competing at the breakdown.
The final score was 43-26 to the Pirates which was well deserved on the balance of play. Try scorers were Will, Jake and Sean with Liam and Jake adding conversions. It was only the second match Vardre had played, so they did well; South Gower next week will surely provide a sterner test. Player of the Week went to Joe for his efforts in his first full game.
