A few players need checking for availability before the teams are posted towards the end of the week, so watch this space.

Pirates v Lougher
After the late Adjustments for absentees and lifts just the bare minimum 10 pirates made it to Lougher but were fortunate with the more experience of our 2 sides. I am sure it is a first that the Pirates came from behind 3 times and is a triumph for commitment and spirit to come away with a good win against quality opposition. Gutsy performances from the engine room of Tom T, Tal and Matthew G with solid backing from Kian and Mat S. Jake C was at his battering-ram best and more structured back play from Jake S, Morgan, Tommy H and Will is a strong platform to build on as we develop more positional play. As always tackling can be better but our breakdown ball recycling won us the day. Pirates 30-lougher 15 (tries Jake C 3, Will 2, Tom t)

Tonna vs Mumbles Pirates
One half of the Pirates squad ventured past Neath up to Tonna and a match high on the hillsides. In the chill of the morning the Pirates made a fiery start with Jon, our captain for the day, scoring a trademark long distance try. Some poor first up tackling of committed Tonna runners saw a number of tries conceded, before Jon scored another try.
After the break the home team ran in a number of easy tries before the Pirates found another gear and upped their intensity. Some good individual tackles halted the Tonna charge and the game was very even for the middle period of this half. A number of good driving mauls (driving mauls I hear you say) gained a lot of ground for the Pirates and a third try was scored. However, further poor tackling lead to the final score being run up to 66 - 17 against the Pirates.
Our Player of the Week was Jon for a true captain's performance, in scoring all three tries. Joe added one of the conversions. Generally there was some good running, but at times this lacked support and, with the local rules allowing for 'bear hugs', this lead to turnovers by Tonna. The Pirates were out-muscled at the break down with 'guard dogs' and 'assassins' in scant supply. Some other positives were the backs hitting the scrum half's pass at pace and crossing the gain line from scrums, though lack support again lead to turnovers.

AWAY vs TONNA and LOUGHER 2 Matches 2 Squads
Excellent to see so many committed to training and match attendence recently. We felt concentration suffered from the 4 'halves' option last Sunday so have arranged 2 matches as a better solution to ensuring everyone gets to play their 30 mins match time - this will only work if sufficient players come so please let us know if you are not available. Also get in touch if we need to switch things around for siblings/lifts etc.07814717334. Also if I have forgotten as I,m writting this without my list give me a call.

Pirates vs Morriston
After two weeks playing away from home, this Sunday morning the Pirates returned to Bishopston for a match against Morriston. As usual a good turn-out from the Pirates meant that we could field different teams for each half, or as it turned out, all four halves of rugby.
Our opponents Morriston were more focused than the Pirates and started well; going into the first break we were already two tries down. Generally the tackling was committed, but the tries were conceded when we lost our defensive alignment after a fews phases of play. In the next 'half' Jake C scored from short range through a good half dozen of the Morriston team. However, good organisation from Morriston lead to further tries.
In the third 'half' good straight running from Will, up the blind side, led to a fine long distance try. In the final section of the game strong running from John, after good interplay with Rhydian and excellent recycling, was rewarded with a fine try. After that, the tackling fell away at the end of the game, as shoulders drooped in the Pirate ranks, and Morriston were able to run in a few more tries. After this marathon game the final score was 19-45.
Good points were again the recycling of the ball and positive driving runs. What let us down, and ultimately was the difference between the teams, was a lack of focus and organisation. Whilst it was nice to see everyone having fun and smiling, at times the high spirits interrupted preparations for the game, particularly when the teams were waiting to play their next half of play.
However, there were lots of good performances and the Player of the Week was shared again this week; the co-winners being Tal and Liam.
A final word on the photos. Guy has excelled himself this week again with too many fabulous photos to post on the blog. He's got them organised now, so speak to him if you want copies of the shots that didn't make it into the blog, and for the previous weeks.

Pirates vs Pontarddulais
The game this week was at Pontarddulais and played in brilliant sunshine. A good turnout meant the Pirates fielded a different team in each half and our captain for the day was Connor. In the first half good work at the breakdown and good recycling meant that a number of try scoring opportunities were created. These were finished off well by Liam, Tommy and Jon. Good tackling across the team restricted the opportunities for Pontarddulais and at half time the Pirates led 5-0.
The second half started off in a similar way with strong running, good work at the breakdown and tries for Morgan, Will and Jake C. The match lost a little structure as more and more mauls were allowed by the referee and Pontarddulais came back into the match a little. The score for the half was 4-1 and for the whole match 9-1 to the Pirates.
After the match a short training match between the two Pirates' teams was played and this game being, if anything, was even more fiercely contested than the main match.
The Player of the Week was shared by three players for showing some great progress and recepients of the illusive trophy were Matthew, Josh and Tomas.

Pontardawe
The Pirates match on Sunday involved a pre-match treasure hunt to a mystery destination over the county border in Neath Port Talbot. The magical mystery tour lead eventually to a windswept field in Pontardawe. Once there, and once our hosts had managed to cobble together a team liberally seasoned with Pirates, we witnessed another entertaining game of rugby.
Well done for all the players that volunteered to play for Pontardawe and help make a game of it. This week's Player of the Week was Morgan for a fine performance against the Pirates.
