Vardre vs Pirates

Another miserable rainy day, another trip over the M4. This Sunday the Pirates made the journey to Clydach, a journey which included a rickety bridge over a raging torrent that would have caused concern even to Indiana Jones. Not the Pirates.

The team line up for the match:

Front Row - Connor, Sean M and Josh B
Second Row - Matt S and Tal
Scrum Half - Liam
Fly Half - Jake S
Centre - Rory
Wings - Sean A and Jon
Subs - Morgan, Harley and Jake C

In the pouring rain the Pirates started well, strong running and good support leading to tries for Sean A, Matt S (finishing a fine team effort for his first try for the Pirates), Liam,
Jon (two) and Jake C. A highlight of the first half were some storming runs from Connor.

A lack of tackling at the end of the first half and start of the second lead to three tries for the home team, with the momentum firmly with Vardre. After refocussing on tackling the Pirates started to put together some good back moves and a times some very entertaining rugby. Three further tries came, two for Sean A, returning with a bang after illness, and a first of the season for Tal as he crashed over.

The final score was 9 - 3, another week with 'local' rules meaning that no conversion attempts were made (45 - 15 in real terms). Players of the Week were Connor for another big physical performance and Matt S for another good tackling stint. Well done to all for another good game in bad conditions and well done to all the travelling support.

Morriston vs Pirates

The Pirates took a full squad up to Morriston for another game of three halves.  The first half started badly with Morriston scoring a couple of quick tries due to poor organisation by the Pirates (the Skulls); a lack of defensive alignment letting us down.  Good support work and ball retention saw the Pirates more competitive, before Morriston again scored a further try after strong running.  The highlight of the half was a fine team try, building through many phases, before Tomos finished strongly in the corner.

All change for the second half and the Pirates (the Crossbones) scored two good tries, from Tom T and Jon, to counter two tries from a stronger Morriston line up. The warm up game alongside the pitch certainly kept the Pirates not on the pitch ready to play and it showed with the commitment being put in.

The third half brought the Skulls back to the pitch and they defended stoutly, with a number of last ditch tackles saving a try against.  Ball retention was good and the Skulls had a good share of possession and territory.  A highlight of this half was the good support and fine inter-passing.  Unfortunately Morriston broke through to score in the last play of the half.  This part of the game was marred by a few bits of skullduggery by the home team, though by all accounts the Skulls stood up well to the intimidation.

The final score was, on a consensus vote by all the spectators I asked, 6 – 3 to Morriston, or 30-15 as no conversions were attempted.  Players of the match were [I have been corrected as I was wrong] Tomasz, for his overall effort and improvement in the contact area, and Rory for a good stint of tackling including tackling Morriston's version of the Incredible Hulk.
