Tonna vs Mumbles Pirates

One half of the Pirates squad ventured past Neath up to Tonna and a match high on the hillsides. In the chill of the morning the Pirates made a fiery start with Jon, our captain for the day, scoring a trademark long distance try. Some poor first up tackling of committed Tonna runners saw a number of tries conceded, before Jon scored another try.

After the break the home team ran in a number of easy tries before the Pirates found another gear and upped their intensity. Some good individual tackles halted the Tonna charge and the game was very even for the middle period of this half. A number of good driving mauls (driving mauls I hear you say) gained a lot of ground for the Pirates and a third try was scored. However, further poor tackling lead to the final score being run up to 66 - 17 against the Pirates.

Our Player of the Week was Jon for a true captain's performance, in scoring all three tries. Joe added one of the conversions. Generally there was some good running, but at times this lacked support and, with the local rules allowing for 'bear hugs', this lead to turnovers by Tonna. The Pirates were out-muscled at the break down with 'guard dogs' and 'assassins' in scant supply. Some other positives were the backs hitting the scrum half's pass at pace and crossing the gain line from scrums, though lack support again lead to turnovers.

The lucky 13.
