No game Sunday 19 Dec
Sorry to have to postpone our parents/boys game and their Christmas treat - but the forecast makes the pitches unplayable and the roads to the beaches scary. See you in January - Merry Christmas Pirates!

This weekend's games
We've had a selection meeting to organise two balanced teams for the weekend; one will be playing at home (Bishopston) against Bryncoch and the other away at Morriston (a chance for some revenge). A few players need checking for availability before the teams are posted towards the end of the week, so watch this space.
The selection team (though there were five of us).
Training 17.30 by lights 23rd Nov
Please dress warmly as we try some "slow motion" rugby. Informal coaches meeting 9pm tonight clubhouse or Hancock if club closed, any parents welcome

Pirates v Lougher
After the late Adjustments for absentees and lifts just the bare minimum 10 pirates made it to Lougher but were fortunate with the more experience of our 2 sides. I am sure it is a first that the Pirates came from behind 3 times and is a triumph for commitment and spirit to come away with a good win against quality opposition. Gutsy performances from the engine room of Tom T, Tal and Matthew G with solid backing from Kian and Mat S. Jake C was at his battering-ram best and more structured back play from Jake S, Morgan, Tommy H and Will is a strong platform to build on as we develop more positional play. As always tackling can be better but our breakdown ball recycling won us the day. Pirates 30-lougher 15 (tries Jake C 3, Will 2, Tom t)

Tonna vs Mumbles Pirates
One half of the Pirates squad ventured past Neath up to Tonna and a match high on the hillsides. In the chill of the morning the Pirates made a fiery start with Jon, our captain for the day, scoring a trademark long distance try. Some poor first up tackling of committed Tonna runners saw a number of tries conceded, before Jon scored another try.
After the break the home team ran in a number of easy tries before the Pirates found another gear and upped their intensity. Some good individual tackles halted the Tonna charge and the game was very even for the middle period of this half. A number of good driving mauls (driving mauls I hear you say) gained a lot of ground for the Pirates and a third try was scored. However, further poor tackling lead to the final score being run up to 66 - 17 against the Pirates.
Our Player of the Week was Jon for a true captain's performance, in scoring all three tries. Joe added one of the conversions. Generally there was some good running, but at times this lacked support and, with the local rules allowing for 'bear hugs', this lead to turnovers by Tonna. The Pirates were out-muscled at the break down with 'guard dogs' and 'assassins' in scant supply. Some other positives were the backs hitting the scrum half's pass at pace and crossing the gain line from scrums, though lack support again lead to turnovers.

AWAY vs TONNA and LOUGHER 2 Matches 2 Squads
Excellent to see so many committed to training and match attendence recently. We felt concentration suffered from the 4 'halves' option last Sunday so have arranged 2 matches as a better solution to ensuring everyone gets to play their 30 mins match time - this will only work if sufficient players come so please let us know if you are not available. Also get in touch if we need to switch things around for siblings/lifts etc.07814717334. Also if I have forgotten as I,m writting this without my list give me a call.

Pirates vs Morriston
After two weeks playing away from home, this Sunday morning the Pirates returned to Bishopston for a match against Morriston. As usual a good turn-out from the Pirates meant that we could field different teams for each half, or as it turned out, all four halves of rugby.
Our opponents Morriston were more focused than the Pirates and started well; going into the first break we were already two tries down. Generally the tackling was committed, but the tries were conceded when we lost our defensive alignment after a fews phases of play. In the next 'half' Jake C scored from short range through a good half dozen of the Morriston team. However, good organisation from Morriston lead to further tries.
In the third 'half' good straight running from Will, up the blind side, led to a fine long distance try. In the final section of the game strong running from John, after good interplay with Rhydian and excellent recycling, was rewarded with a fine try. After that, the tackling fell away at the end of the game, as shoulders drooped in the Pirate ranks, and Morriston were able to run in a few more tries. After this marathon game the final score was 19-45.
Good points were again the recycling of the ball and positive driving runs. What let us down, and ultimately was the difference between the teams, was a lack of focus and organisation. Whilst it was nice to see everyone having fun and smiling, at times the high spirits interrupted preparations for the game, particularly when the teams were waiting to play their next half of play.
However, there were lots of good performances and the Player of the Week was shared again this week; the co-winners being Tal and Liam.
A final word on the photos. Guy has excelled himself this week again with too many fabulous photos to post on the blog. He's got them organised now, so speak to him if you want copies of the shots that didn't make it into the blog, and for the previous weeks.

Pirates vs Pontarddulais
The game this week was at Pontarddulais and played in brilliant sunshine. A good turnout meant the Pirates fielded a different team in each half and our captain for the day was Connor. In the first half good work at the breakdown and good recycling meant that a number of try scoring opportunities were created. These were finished off well by Liam, Tommy and Jon. Good tackling across the team restricted the opportunities for Pontarddulais and at half time the Pirates led 5-0.
The second half started off in a similar way with strong running, good work at the breakdown and tries for Morgan, Will and Jake C. The match lost a little structure as more and more mauls were allowed by the referee and Pontarddulais came back into the match a little. The score for the half was 4-1 and for the whole match 9-1 to the Pirates.
After the match a short training match between the two Pirates' teams was played and this game being, if anything, was even more fiercely contested than the main match.
The Player of the Week was shared by three players for showing some great progress and recepients of the illusive trophy were Matthew, Josh and Tomas.

Pontardawe
The Pirates match on Sunday involved a pre-match treasure hunt to a mystery destination over the county border in Neath Port Talbot. The magical mystery tour lead eventually to a windswept field in Pontardawe. Once there, and once our hosts had managed to cobble together a team liberally seasoned with Pirates, we witnessed another entertaining game of rugby.
Well done for all the players that volunteered to play for Pontardawe and help make a game of it. This week's Player of the Week was Morgan for a fine performance against the Pirates.

TRAINING MATCH 10.30 BISHOPSTON SUNDAY 24
Sadly given the hype and the rivalry South Gower can not field a team presumably due to half term. We will use the time again to work on team skills / ball retention and building the confidence and experience of our newer players. Please make every effort to attend Sunday and no training Tues.

Pirates vs Vardre
The match today against Vardre was the first competitive match for a number of our new Pirates including Joe, Tomos, Owen, Matthew and Cian. After an entertaining practice match they got a taste of the physical difference between practice and the real thing.
In the match Vardre started strongly and took an early lead. However, the introduction in the middle third of the game of some of our more experienced players helped to change the momentum of the match. The Pirates took the lead and continued to play some nice rugby at times, off-loading in the tackle and supporting well. A couple of nice turn-overs were won by Tal and Tom T competing at the breakdown.
The final score was 43-26 to the Pirates which was well deserved on the balance of play. Try scorers were Will, Jake and Sean with Liam and Jake adding conversions. It was only the second match Vardre had played, so they did well; South Gower next week will surely provide a sterner test. Player of the Week went to Joe for his efforts in his first full game.

Sunday 17th Home, Bishopston vs Vardre
Meet at 10,00 for warm up and full practice match. We will split the teams this week and next in order to give all our new players a taste of match action. I would like the full squad to train and take part in the training match concentrating on team work by passing or pencil/bulldog. It is also time to up the pace and power a level. Priority starting in the match tomorrow will then go to new and developing players this week, whilst next week we will front up to South Gower with a strong starting line-up.

Training match at Bishopston
There was no game this Sunday so the team had a training session finishing with a match. In training the players worked on competing in the contact area with one of the highlights this week being the previously unstoppable Josh, finally being stopped by Rhidian.
In the game the orange bibs won 21-7. The Players of the Week were Thomas T and Freddie for commitment in the tackle area creating turnovers. Other good work included Jake S and Jake C for taking the ball at pace and Rhidian for organising his back line well.

Clifton
Twelve hardy players, and travelling supporters, made the trek from windswept Swansea to equally poor weather in Clifton, where they competed with the elements and the English rules.
In the first game against Cleve we started brightly and scored a fine try by working Will into space. Unfortunately Cleve fought back to score two tries, one with the last play of the game to win 2 - 1.
The second game against the hosts was a hard fought encounter with chances on both sides. Clifton scoring the only try to win 1 - 0.
The third game was by far our best team performance against a well drilled and physical Redruth team. Though Redruth scored two first half tries, we had a number of good passages of play recycling, running and passing well. The second half was even better with Jake C and Tom T going close in the corner, but touch in goal was given. We drove their scrum off the ball and over their try line on their put in, but unfortunately weren't given the try. The match ended 2 - 0 to Redruth though we were unlucky not to get a result after a great effort.
In the final game an organised Bath team ran in three tries, but we continued to tackle our hearts out.
After a huddle of coaches and parents it was agreed that the team should share the player of the week trophy for the all round performance. Key elements of play that were encouraging were the positional play of the wings, the scrummaging and the recycling of the ball.

Finally: I am holding a talk on Health & Nutrition at the rugby club on Monday at 8.30 pm and ypu are more than welcome come along. It will include weight management for those interested in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
We are hosting the visiting team afterwards at the club house. This means that any players must cover up (track suit bottoms etc) or change to go into the clubhouse. A major part of rugby culture is to host teams after the game and is one of the real enjoyments of being part of the rugby faternity.

Win one, Lose one!
Mixed bag today, we did not get in the groove until the second game against Dunvant. That finished 21 - 19 and Jake has to be mentioned in stiffening the team up. Good performances from others mentioned by Ceri.
Training will focus on the tackel zone, as there were too many missed tackles in both games. The new way of playing makes the first tackle really important.
Quite a few are not available next week, so it will be helpful if you could let Ceri know your availability for next weekend.
Advance notice that there are games scheduled for both Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th September.

Well done to all 18 Players on Sunday. John will be focusing on passing this session. We need to decide about Bristol tour in the next few days. Tournament is 10 am til
3pm Sun 3rd Oct. Can everyone tell Ceri at training if they would like to go, we would need a minimum of 11 definates. If we have a team we can look at daytrip vs up night before, hotels are more pricy due to Ryder Cup.

Sunday 5th Home (Bishopston) vs Neath & Lougher
We are expecting 2 matches this Sunday at Bishopston. Please meet 10.15.
A good training session for 13 members of our squad this Tues and the hardy 6 who came the week before for kicking training. Given the new rules we will build on our work in the contact area and see how the matchs develop.
Revision
ONLY 2 players from each team can get directly involved in the contact
Attack 1 (Ball carrier) goes into tackle
Defender 1 (Tackler) makes a LOW tackle (waist or below)
Attack 1 when tackled does his best to place the ball on his team side (PENCIL) so that
Attack 2 (Guard Dog) can stand over the tackled player and ball in a strong body position to fend off the wipe-out and allow the next player (Attack 3 /acting scrum half ) to pick it up and play on
Defender 2 (assassin) goes in THROUGH THE GATE, ON-SIDE to smash/wipe out the guard dog to push him off the ball to earn a turnover.
Please go through this at home, especially if you missed the early training sessions, so everyone knows the jargon.
Pembroke would like a tour match on Sat 25th Sept at our home. Please can you let me know on Sun/text/email (07814717334/alexchase@btinternet.com) if you are available so we can confirm, afternoon kick off (?3pm)

Last Match of the Season vs Ruthin at Fall Bay Sunday 9th May
Everyone is welcome for last match and end of season festivities, weather permitting. Meet at 10.30 at Fall Bay Rugby Club, Scurlage for 11am kick off. Then down to Horton Beach for BBQ, games and player presentations. Food provided for players, parents welcome to bring own food to cook on BBQ.
The coaches were thrilled with performances in Luctonians and Gower Cup tournaments and really look forward to maximising our potential next season. Well done to each and every player.
We are always on the look out for any help with coaching, refing, admin, catering etc. Free coaching and ref courses available via MRFC.
Please note Mumbles Pirates now have our own bank account, having split from Mumbles Tag rugby, and need everyone to change their direct debits to our new bank details. Subs from this year have gone towards balls, tackle bags, shorts, socks, training tops, tournament entry fees and our new pirates gazebo as seen at the Gower Cup! Finally, thanks to all our sponsors who provided this seasons shirts - Verdis, Paninis, and Orbus Neisch.
A Mumbles RFC minis funday is planned for 28th August with a match for us against Gowerton RFC. Training will probably start mid August so keep an eye on the blog and have a great summer.

MRFC Charity Appeal for Haiti
Message from Rhys Davies of MRFC:
Hi All,
Mumbles RFC would like to try and help raise some money for the Haiti Appeal.
Mathew Reeves and Myself are trying to arrange a charity walk to raise money.
We need your help!!!!
What we are looking to do is arrange for as many people to walk from Mumbles RFC along to Blackpill and Back. We are looking to encourage as many members of the club along with their friends and family to take part in this walk.
We are looking to do the walk on Sunday 21st Feb at 2pm. This will give the junior teams to get back after their rugby games to join in the walk.
We would be looking for a Donation to take part ( £5 per person / family ). Any other idea's how we can raise money are welcome.
I know it is becoming a little short notice but we would like you ( Robin and Junior Managers ) to encourage as many of your player and their families to take part. Mathew and I will get the senior players there.
There will be food and refreshments available in the club so hopefully after a quick walk we can enjoy each other company back in the club after.
Please pass this e-mail on to anyone you think would like to take part - the more the merrier.
Any questions you can contact me on 07825335180 or speak to Mark in the club.
Thanks and looking forward to your support

Uplands Home Bishopston 10:00 Sun 7th
10 O'clock for 10.30 kick off. Looking for a passing game and some quick ruck ball. Be in no doubt Mumbles/Uplands U9 is the most important match of the weekend!
I would like to see everyone make one tackle!
I would like to see the strogest runners looking for support and the pass, not getting isolated on their own or running into touch!
Can people start thinking about the Luctonians Tour also. Those coming up the night before should book the Premier Inn Hereford early for Sat 17th April. Alternatively it is doable as day trip. Evening entertainment to be discussed!
